Dalmatian food is Mediterranean. Not exactly Italian but much like it. Lots of fish and grilled meat for dinner and something lighter for lunch. Most places will provide white Italian-style bread free of charge while you wait for your food.
Lunch typically costs around 10 Euros. Lunch might be pizza or a salad with a soft drink or a beer.
Dinner is 15-25 Euro. If your holiday takes you to one of the countless small family-run roadside restaurants, it pays off to ask what they can recommend. Maybe a member of the family or a friend has just caught calamari or butchered a lamb.
Prices (on everything) are higher in Dubrovnik.
Croatian wine is excellent though mostly unknown outside the former Yugoslavia. There are the normal table wines (stolno vino), the home-made wines and the high-quality wines (kvalitetno and vrhunsko). You get what you pay for - maybe with the exception of the home made wines that can be anything from plain to excellent.
There are lots of reasons why tourists on holiday and locals alike go
to Neum, and one main reason is lower prices than in Croatian.
Cigarettes and liquor are cheaper than in Croatia and so are food and
most other things as well.
The restaurants on the coastal road are neither good nor bad. We
recommend that you use them for a snack or a cup of coffee and drive
on towards Dubrovnik where you find Restaurant Karaka almost at the
end of Neum.
You can also turn right and drive down towards the beach. On the
right-hand side of the road, you will find two restaurants. They both
have a good selection on the menu and a reasonable price/quality
ratio. Humska Kuca (mountain hut) is the first one just after the
entrance to Hotel Sunce and then there is Bonaca about 100 meters
before the bottom of the road. Bonaca has excellent fish, and Humska
Kuca has the biggest menu card. Both are reasonable with their prices
and provide a good and professional service.
Going North from Komarna you head into the Neretva River Delta. Opposite the petrol station in Opuzen, the Hotel Merlot has a good menu card and a good kitchen. On the town-hall square in Opuzen, there is a small konoba to the left of the church..
Metkovic 20 km. away has three restaurants and three pizzerias. Konoba Lanterna on Splitska 21 and Restaurant and pizzeria Milano on Sportska Street and Restaurant Metkovic at Oca Ante Gabria 11 (behind a very old former prison). . There are also dozens of cafes everywhere and especially on Sportska Street by the stadium. Behind the hospital is another pizzeria with a limited selection and also one next the the new market place.
If you want to travel a little further on, we recommend a meal at "Duda i Mate" in Vid. Vid village is on top of the ancient Narona ruins and Restaurant "Duda i Mate" is on the left just as you enter the village at the place where the Roman Forum used to be and close to the river. If you follow the road a few kilometers further on you find Konoba Vrilo with a very good food and reasonable prices.
The picture here is from a "secret" bar outside the walls of Dubrovnik old town. It is not easy to find, but do try. From the main square walk past Rector's Palace and the Cathedral, then through small alleys until you hit the wall. At this point, turn right and look out for a sign saying, "cold drinks". That's it. Through a small door, you are able to get to the other side of the wall and to the bar.
When you visit Dubrovnik, as you really must, there are some top-rated restaurants that can give you a good experience. Restaurant Nautika just outside the Pile Gare, Proto and Mimoza. Our personal choice is Taj Mahal. It is a restaurant specialized in Bosnian food and the address is south of Placa on Nikole Gucetica 2.
